I stumbled across this event on facebook and it seemed like an interesting event and an interesting location; Grand Circus in Detroit. The weather cooperated for the entire event, only downpouring after the event was over. They made great use of the space, circling the central fountain with tents, and then another circle of tents around that. For the most part beers were on the outside, and wines and spirits on the inside.
Two food trucks, from Marconi’s pizza and Andiamo were on site as well. The event drew a mix of people, both from its location and the variety of drinks available. A band (Weekend Come Back) played the entire night and overall the event was well run and enjoyable.
However I’ll admit I was disappointed that of the 24 breweries presents, only 11 were actually from Michigan. With there being over 400 breweries in Michigan (and several of those within walking distance of the park) it was surprising to me that our state wasn’t better represented. I had similar issues when I went looking for a Michigan wine to sample, a majority of the wineries present were not Michigan based.
I spoke with many of the volunteers and people manning the tests; only two of which were breweries represented by their own staff. I’ve volunteered pouring at similar events before and I know how chaotic it can be, but for the most part they didn’t know much about the beers they were pouring.
Overall, the event was just enjoyable and I would attend again. However I would highly encourage the event to have more focus on Michigan beer and wine if they decide to host again.
