Summer is here in Michigan and that means we have a few months of beautiful sunshine to enjoy. There are tons of fun things to do in Michigan in the warmer months, and I’ve selected some my favorite activities in which including Michigan wine, beer, or spirits make the experience more fun!
A picnic at the park
Michigan is full of wonderful spots to pop a squat and enjoy a meal under the sun – or shade if you prefer. One of my favorite picnic spots is at Kensington Metro Park. It’s a short drive from my house, and there are plenty of areas around the lake to lay out a blanket and relax. It’s best in the evening just before sunset when all the crowds have left the park. I like to bring a bottle of light, crisp white wine (perhaps Pinot Gris from Black Star Farms) to sip while watching the sun set over the sailboats on the water.
Canoeing/Tubing Down A River
There’s nothing better than a leisurely float in the cool waters of a Michigan river. That is unless you have a cooler with you filled with Widow Maker Black Ale from Keweenaw Brewing Company. This is the perfect river beer because it comes in a can (glass is bad for river journeys) and it’s a lighter ale with a lot of flavor. My favorite Michigan floating spot is Crystal River in Glen Arbor. After the 11 mile float you end up in Lake Michigan.
Patio Party
One of my favorite summer activities is spending some time with friends out on the patio. Whether at a house or a restaurant, it’s nice to include a refreshing summer cocktail such as Mint Blueberry Lemonade with Vodka. There are a ton of great patios to play on, the best would have to be the Pink Pony on Mackinac Island. There’s a stunning view of the ferries coming and going from the island, and they’ve got a great Michigan craft beer list.
What’s your favorite thing to do during the Michigan summer, and what do you like to bring along to make it more fun?
