As the popularity of craft beer is on the rise, so are the amount of festivals and events sprouting up to support it. When you think of “Summer Beer Fest,” one immediately thinks of the Michigan Summer Beer Festival held each year in Ypsilanti, put on by the Michigan Brewers Guild. However there are several new festivals that are going on this summer revolving around craft beer. There’s the Michigan Beerfest at DTE on June 15th, The Wild West Summer Beer Festival in Royal Oak, BRU Fest in Royal Oak, and the 2nd annual Summer Beer Fest in Detroit.

There was much confusion earlier this year when there were rumors that the Summer Beer Fest was moving to Detroit. Many thought that the Michigan Summer Beer Fest put on by the Brewers Guild was moving, when in fact the mentions were about the location of the Detroit Summer Beer Fest put on by Westborn Market. The event is in Campus Martius Park on June 21st and 22nd and will feature live music, games and food to compliment over 120 featured beers.

The Detroit Summer Beer Fest differs from the Brewers Guild version in that there will be beers featured from all over the world, not just from Michigan. Tickets for each day are $45 (2-day pass $70) and include tasting cup, 20 2-oz serving tabs per session, and program guide. Additional servings and food will be available for purchase. “Designated Driver” tickets are available for $10 and must accompany a paid attendee.

On Saturday a limited-quantity VIP session for $70 includes entry into event at 1pm (one hour before general admission), a commemorative tasting glass, 25 2-oz serving tabs and complimentary hors d’oeuvres. As part of this year’s expanded Beer Fest, attendees can sample unique “firkin” (cask ale) beers, enjoy a stogie in the cigar lounge, marvel at unique side show acts, and even participate in a beer belly contest! Delicious food offerings will be provided by U.P. Pasties Company, Chicken Shack, The Different Twist Pretzel Co., and Jay’s Stuffed Burgers.

Advance tickets are now available at Westborn Market (3 metro Detroit locations where advance tickets can be purchased, including Berkley, Dearborn and Livonia) and www.detroitsummerbeerfest.com.

No matter what event you choose to attend this summer, the mission remains the same. Drink and promote Michigan beer, because it is outstanding! Cheers!
