MAWBY, Michigan’s Premier Sparkling Wine Producer, Releases Sparkling Cider Just in Time for Summer
Suttons Bay, MI-After 22 years focusing on sparkling wines, MAWBY winery is releasing its first series of sparkling ciders.
“We wanted to get in on the fun the rest of the state and country has been having with hard apple cider,” said winemaker Mike Laing, “but put the MAWBY spin on it.”
The ciders, made in both the Method Champenoise and tank fermented style typically associated with sparkling wines, are made with 100% Leelanau County apples.
Drinkable, refreshing and a bit more delicate than a traditional hard cider, the first of four ciders, BRIGHT, is a welcome addition to the MAWBY line up.
“We froze some of the juice from the apples and used it in the dosage in place of sugar,” Laing said. “It really lifts the fresh apple aromas to the nose and provides balance with a touch of sweetness.”
BRIGHT recently won a gold medal at the Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition (GLINTCAP) in Grand Rapids, MI. The ciders will range from $12-$18 a bottle and are available in the tasting room.
Other ciders will roll out over the course of the year. The next, century, will be released at the end of July and features centennial hops from Leelanau County.
