This year, New Holland Artisan Spirits in Holland, Michigan is putting its Prohibition-era still to work, with the release of three new spirit offerings. The award-winning creator of craft beer andartisan spirits will release an orange liqueur – Clockwork Orange and two barrel-aged offerings –Knickerbocker Barrel Gin and Barreled Hatter Royale starting this spring.

“For New Holland, distilling has always included exploration of flavor, process and barrel aging,” said Brett VanderKamp, president and co-founder of New Holland Brewing Co. & Artisan Spirits. “Knickerbocker gin and Hatter Royale, our hopped whiskey, have been standouts in our spirits line-up and after some very small-batch barrel-aging of these brands, we knew we had to find a way to share them with more people, so they could enjoy these unique flavors.”

While Knickerbocker and Hatter Royale are familiar names in the NHAS line-up, the distillery’s release of Clockwork Orange, an orange liqueur, is something altogether different.

“Citrus flavor is a bedrock of classic cocktails, and traditionally, the best orange liqueurs have been imported from France,” says vice president of sales and marketing, Fred Bueltmann. “Necessity is the mother of all invention I guess, and since our pub is limited by law to only serve the spirits we make, we set out to make the best American craft orange liqueur we could imagine.”

Clockwork Orange has been behind the bar at New Holland for years, however, the wonderful play off of the citrus and spices, are now available to the distillery’s entire market.

Bueltmann goes on, “Plus, I’ve got to tell you – a margarita made with Hatter Royale and Clockwork Orange – it’s a thing of beauty.”

Other spring spirit releases includes the patriarch of New Holland’s whiskey program, Zeppelin Bend – a straight malt whiskey – that’s popularity has led to two releases annually. This release of Zeppelin Bend is particularly special, as it is the last batch that was made on NHAS’s original still, which now resides at the downtown Holland pub for micro-distilling.

There’s also Bill’s Michigan Wheat Whiskey – a nod to local agriculture, made with wheat grown and malted in our state of Michigan and named after distilling icon, Bill Owens; andDouble Down Barley Whiskey, our first offering from our now popular Brewers’ Whiskey series, will be sporting a new label along with finding its way into 750ml bottles.

“Since 2005, New Holland Artisan Spirits has been doing important work,” says VanderKamp. “Creating drinks that elevate everyday occasions into unique experiences. Art can change the world. That might sound a little lofty, but we really believe when people taste what we create, it will change their understanding of what spirits can be.”
