We love anything that brings more craft beer to Detroit, but this idea is just about one of the coolest we’ve ever heard. Read all about pedal-powered beer, and if you can, make a donation to help them open their doors here:

“Pedal-Power Beer” Brothers pursue opening brewery in Detroit’s Eastern Market
Windmill Pointe Brewing Company’s Shawn and Aaron Grose have launched a community “crowdfunding” campaign to advance their pursuit of bringing a brewery to Detroit’s Eastern Market. The “alternative thinking” Grosse Pointe natives have developed a patent-pending brewing method in which the energy source is a combination of people –powered energy generated by stationary bicycles supported by wind and solar technologies. The crowd funding effort will support their vision to be the country’s first “pedal-powered” brewery.
“With our “Pedal-Powered Beer” energy monitoring program and sustainable philosophy, we want to create a positive impact in our community and produce a more environmentally friendly beer in Detroit”, stated Shawn Grose. “Aaron and I see Pedal-Powered Beer™ as a community-driven effort to create unique beer styles while building an authentic relationship between our patrons and the brewery. By launching a crowdfunding campaign, we’ll be one step closer to opening the country’s very first pedal-powered brewery in Detroit.”
Shawn and Aaron’s goal is to raise $50,000 in 60 days utilizing the indiegogo.com crowdfunding platform. The Windmill Pointe Brewing page on Indiegogo features a very short intro video and all the details on how the funding will be used. Contribution levels have been designed to meet every budget level, from a simple $10 to a healthy $10,000.
“This is not a whim,” says Aaron Grose. “It took us years of brewing, working in the industry and a lot of late nights to get us to this point. In addition to brewing a great craft beer, we wanted to be different. And most importantly, have a business plan that works for the betterment of the community. I think we’ve done that.”
A successful crowd-funding campaign will be a key element in Aaron and Shawn’s quest for a permanent brewery. Over the past several months, they have conducted “mobile brewing sessions” throughout the Detroit area to demonstrate their unique brewing technology and the community environment it creates.
“It works,” continued Shawn. “We’ve proven that. Now we want to continue the momentum. For that $10,000 contributor I’ll throw in a pair of customized Windmill Pointe Detroit Bike Company cycles.
