It finally happened – I got an ice cream maker for Christmas! And of course the very first attempt at making my favorite dessert had to be something including beer. Since the alcohol isn’t going to cook out of this one, and the flavor of the beer is going to be pretty apparent, I chose a sweet and very strong, caramel flavored ale, Dragon’s Milk from New Holland Brewing Company.
I used a 1.2 quart automatic ice cream maker, and the recipe that follows made about 1 quart of ice cream.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups Dragon's Milk
- 2 cups of heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- 4 egg yolks
- 3/4 cups of sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
Step 1
Whisk together the cream, sugar, egg yolks, and salt in a medium sauce pan over medium heat for about 5 minutes.
Step 2
Remove from heat, and pour into a large bowl through a strainer. Add vanilla and the beer.
Step 3
Place the bowl into the refrigerator and chill for two hours.
Step 4
Pour the mixture into the ice cream maker, mix for 30 minutes or whatever instructions come with your maker. The consistency will be more like a frosty than ice cream because of the alcohol content. Scoop out the ice cream into a freezer safe container and freeze overnight to get a firmer, more ice cream like mix.
