mbtb-wineLast night was pretty awesome as I got to combine two of my favorite things – drinking Michigan wine with Michigan State Alumni. The folks over at the Macomb Spartan Alumni Group put together a really cool event at The Michigan By The Bottle Tasting Room in Shelby Township. They invited me to attend as a special guest, and given that I would finally be able to visit MBTB AND hang out with my fellow Spartans, I couldn’t refuse!

Not only did we get to sample wines from Michigan wineries, many of which I hadn’t had before, but we also were privileged to hear a mini presentation from Dr. Ron Perry of the MSU Department of Horticulture on the state of Michigan wine. He explained the types of grapes that do well in the Michigan climate, and the different areas that are most suitable to produce them. If only his Wine Appreciation class would have been available when I was attending Michigan State!

I loved the Michigan By The Bottle Tasting Room, and am very sad to admit that it was my first time out there. What a cool place! They have partnered with six different Michigan wineries to allow patrons to sample the wine in metro Detroit. A lot of the wineries don’t have a wide distribution, so it enables you to not have to travel as far (depending on where you live of course) to taste what Michigan has to offer. They also have bottles for purchase as well as local food, art, and other merchandise.

I’d like to give a huge THANKS to the Macomb Spartans for inviting me to attend this great event. To learn more about the Macomb Spartans and see their upcoming events, visit their Facebook page.
